New Mage Seeks Advice

Hey,

Got the game today. I like it. So far I've done minor quests. I have been to Buyan...and have gotten as far as completing the Rustler's Run.

I tried to kill the creatures (I believe they were Varn) from the well, for water supply, but an ant came up and one shotted me.

I haven't put any skill or stat points in to place yet because I didn't know what I want to be. I understand I'll want endurance so ants don't one shot me.

(edit: i am level 8.)
I've decided I want to be a mage.

The town of Buyan offers one trader selling cards. All of his cards are for necromancy and I did some research and couldn't find any info on a necromancer trader in the beginning parts of the game?!

I also haven't found any vendors selling low level usable (ie fire, earth) cards nor have I looted any.

I'm a bit confused as to what to do as a mage with such WEAK spells...

I thought maybe I should try going to Hatmandor to seek out vendors of new cards.

I acquired a rite of passage and started my journey. I pulled up the map and, boy, does that travel look far!

...Some Varns killed me a few paces outside of town.

...What am I missing about this game... Did I miss a major starting town or something??

PS, I would love to be a mage that uses hard hitting spells and summons.

First, read this guide to understand how to compose spells:

Then, find Queen's Crossroads teleport/Mage's Guild. It's not very far from Bayan, but you will need to either fight or evade a lot of Varns. I suggest you also try levelling up a bit on rhinos, ostriches and other easy-to-kill animals. If you see ants, you can always run away.. or climb somewhere they won't reach you and rain simple firebolts on them till they die.

That is great info thanks!

I'm here and got my mage started. I'm using firebolt x3 and missle x2 with damage mod.

It's not bad...

I tried some AoE skills but they really soak up my mana and do crap damage!

I just turned my game off, but there's a skill that decreases mana cost (forgot the name)...do you know where I can find that book?

Also...I want to start summoning things. I found the skill book but haven't been able to locate any cards. Any ideas?

PS. Any tips on good card combos for an effective (high damage + low mana cost) spell?

Try single-target spells based on ENCHANT carrier. They work instantly on a single target, unlike missiles, but cost around half the price of AOE-carried spells. The drawback is that you can only cast those on an enemy if you see the enemy.
For spellcards, revisit Mage's Guild during the day or learn how to reset their inventories (it's easy). Eventually they will have summoning carriers. You have to have the skill learned in order for the cards to show up AFAIK.

Great thanks. Oh inventories reset? That's awesome. I'll check that out!!

Also I'll try the effects.

I just made a missile followed by aoe. Kind of like a splash damage fireball. I learned it from your spell guide URL.

cant seem to find a place to explain inventory resets
EDIT: nevermind...i see they seem to refresh auto.

just tried the Enchant carrier...MUCH BETTER!

I now have summons and do nice damage with Enchant...I'm suddenly much stronger.

I'm decent, glad you found the page early on and are learning to be stronger then and not later like myself. I found I couldnt be full fledged rogue and mage at same time so took to some magic and mostly dual weapons after a couple hours of trying to make spells stronger on my own. I'm better at magic now after a couple of regressions along the way though. So yeah, lesson learned, it's all or nothing for one type of fighting in the game to become proficient in that style.
