Reality Pump Gaming Studios - behind the scenes, part 2/2
20. August 2004 03:16 - by Phalynx
What are the reasons for their success?
For example: Reality Pump have sold over 2.5 million units of the Earth series worldwide! Thanks to ZuxxeZ's financial guarantee and its relationship with Reality Pump, the developers at RP can fully focus on the development of new games. As they are given a certain budget on every project, they can plan ahead. Employees are motivated while having a steady income to depend on. The work relationship with the publisher has been increased after this long period together. Reality Pump also has the advantage over other studios in Poland provided by tools, training and cutting-edge technologies provided by ZuxxeZ. In addition ZuxxeZ's influence on the company is important as they know the market and its risks. Also noteworthy is the fact that other game developers will also have better access to the Western European market as Poland becomes a member of the European Union.

Reality Pump have shown us their knowledge of their business area several times. But what are Reality Pump's steps to a new game?
First, an idea is discussed in a team and the technical resources are evaluated. After that they develop a prototype of the game - a base model. Next the developers add the details to the model and complete it. The next 6 months are dedicated to betatesting and quality assurance. On average the whole process takes about 2 to 2.5 years. Often two or three games are developed simultanously, since they work on several projects together with other groups (Infinite-X, In Images, Inside Earth Operations, Forces of Chaos Development), resulting in games overlapping. For example a graphic artist doesn't just work 2.5 years on graphics for one certain game - so a good management is an important factor. Mirek Dymek, who distributes tasks, is responsible for good working management.

As they can't and don't want to mass produce sci-fi titles, Reality Pump tries to get a wide variety into their portfolio for example with their game "Heli Heroes" or the 180° turn "KnightShift": tanks become knights, harvesters are transformed into mad cows. They know that a good game depends not only on superior new graphics, so Earth 2160 won't be Earth 2150 with better graphics. People always want something new. Reality Pump provides just that.
After the release of a new game, they proceed to the next project. Reality Pump plays the own games only as long as they aren't working on something new.

When I wrote this text I searched my hard disk for usable material. I actually found old pictures of Reality Pump. These pictures show team Krakow (nowadays known as Reality Pump) during the time they developed Earth 2150.
